Detroit Medical Center Harper University Hospital Integrated Cardiology Unit Detroit, Michigan The
renovations to the Cardiac Care Unit at The Detroit Medical Center grouped the cardiac
intensive care area with the stepped down observation rooms with the Cardiac Care Nursing
Unit. The renovated patient units project a warm compassionate environment and reduced
the cold stark clinical lines of a typical patient bed area. The feeling is more of a
suite than a patient care area. The nursing station projects an image of a hospitality
concierge. Its openness with a significant amount of glass augments the unobstructed
view of the staff to the patients and families yet maintain patient confidentiality.
The Integrated Cardiology Unit increases patient satisfaction and comfort with its
uplifting color palette and creative use of materials. The
integrated project also included the Electro Physiology Suite. An additional bi-plane
unit was installed and the old single plane was replaced with a modern one. Abandoning
the secondary corridor enlarged the cramped quarters. This corridor became part of the
suite. The equipment that was stored in many locations on the floor could then be
localized in the E. P. Suite. The locker area was upgraded and a conference room/break
room was added. The clean corridor was segregated to allow one central scrub area. A
transition vestibule was added. The holding area for Electro Physiology was relocated
to near the Laboratory in a well-monitored yet fully accessible area for the patients
and family members of patients.
