Mercy Memorial Hospital Major Project Series Monroe, Michigan Mercy Memorial Hospital continues to enjoy an enviable
position of providing the majority of services to a multi-county region of southeast Michigan,
and additionally some communities of northwest Ohio. This is a very competitive market and to
ensure continued success, Mercy Memorial determined that a master plan, taking an overview of
the systems products, services, operation and facilities was in order. The Hospital system
master plan identified the need to provide new products and service lines, and to enhance
the Hospital’s image through a series of improvements at the main campus. The Master Plan produced a series of projects, which will
improve literally all facets of the Hospital’s operation and will provide for a successful
integration of the inpatient and outpatient services offered. The existing Hospital has been
a truly separate entity with distinct entrances and operations. The new program calls for a
unification initiated by running a central services spine through the entire facility from
north to south and incorporating multiple and identifiable entrances supporting all functions.
Patients have the opportunity of entering the main campus entry; north outpatient or procedures
center entry, making parking and access to services simple. The central spine provides simple access to all outpatient
and inpatient services including registration/admissions, emergency services, diagnostic imaging,
procedures, surgery and inpatient services. The spine, which is treated in a retail fashion also
provides for amenities including dining opportunities, conference center, retail pharmacy,
education and the chapel. The architecture takes a fresh look at the facility,
while maintaining the rich history and tradition of Mercy Memorial. The approach is
contemporary and soft, incorporating large amounts of glass and stone to achieve a light,
sophisticated look, while projecting an image of strength. The centerpiece is a new
two-story atrium entrance from which the central access integrates both inpatient and
ambulatory services.
