Oakwood Healthcare has long been recognized as the leader in providing healthcare to the downriver and Western Wayne communities of Metro Detroit. The system composed of four hospitals and numerous outpatient sites has earned its reputation through provision of high-quality medicine delivered in Centers of Excellence.

One of those Centers of Excellence is Orthopedics. Oakwood has a long tradition in providing leading Orthopedic diagnostics, surgery and rehabilitation. Recently, Oakwood engaged Hobbs+Black to create a Bone and Joint Institute at its Southshore Medical Center located in Trenton, Michigan. Success of that program has led to the development of a similar program, the Bone and Joint Institute at Heritage Hospital.

The program for the effort is comprehensive embodying diagnostics, treatment (both surgical and non-surgical), rehabilitation and research. Both Inpatient and Ambulatory in nature, the Heritage Bone and Joint Institute focuses on wellness and hospitality. Components include both expansion and renovation of the hospital’s surgical service providing for a patient, family and staff focused hospitality environment and including all private prep / recovery rooms, a new Pain Management Center recognizing that all Orthopedic cases do not require surgery and a Surgical Teaching Lab where new treatments and protocols are learned and skills perfected.

A new 12-bed all private Inpatient Unit is provided supporting the Institute’s goals with bariatric services, on-site rehabilitation and family-integrated operations.

The aesthetic is very hotel-like creating a calm and family engaging atmosphere both inside and out. The existing Heritage Hospital is contemporary in style with multiple courtyards breaking up the mass of the facility. Combined with a very nature-oriented landscape of mature woods, architecture of the Bone and Joint Institute continues the architecture in its use of brick, stone, wood and glass and transitioning the outdoors in.
