Washtenaw Community College
Morris Lawrence Building
Ann Arbor, Michigan

Originally known as the Job Skills and Campus Events Center, the Washtenaw Community College Morris Lawrence Building was designed and developed by Hobbs + Black Architects. The building is located on the eastern outskirts of campus, where the conference functions are more readily accessible to the community.

The more than 60,000 square foot facility is home to three fundamentally different functions:

1. Performing Arts
2. Conference Services
3. Police Training

The academic curriculum portions of the building's performing arts area are separated from the non-academic curriculum areas of the building, conference services and police training areas by a 7,000 square foot central lobby space. This central lobby space serves as a gathering place for the performing arts auditorium, overflow space for the conference services public functions and a walk-through corridor toward central campus.

Originally constructed in 1989, Hobbs + Black has since added a dance studio and classrooms, renovated the auditorium green room, and expanded the kitchen.

The southern performing arts area contains a 550-seat auditorium with green room, music program facilities, a recording studio, a dance studio, offices, classrooms, and toilet facilities. The central conference services area contains meeting/conference rooms, kitchen facilities and offices. The northern police academy area contains a firing range, an exercise/judo room, a fire arms test simulator, a forensic room, offices, classrooms, lockers and toilet facilities.
